Bully proofing your child – some advice

Bullying and Anti Bullying

We kindly request that you discuss with your child the ‘Rules of confrontation and Rules of engagement’ outlined below in this information sheet. If your child is being bullied, you must, as a family, have a bully-proof plan. A sort of ‘code of ethics’ your family believes in, on how people should treat each other. Having a family plan (knowing you are behind them 100%) and reviewing the ‘confrontational and engagement rules’ will empower your child with a process, which is telegraphed and read by the bully when your child is confronted.

The anti-bullying techniques and strategies we teach at our club will empower your child. The work done with us and at home will only be useful to your child if they know: They have your full support and backing and that you are behind them 100% if they decide to stand up and defend themselves when tormented by the bully. Your child will NOT stand up to the bully if: They are afraid of school policies (suspended or kept after school for example) or of parental punishment.

The 4 confrontational rules

  1. The interaction between your child and the bully must not last long.
  2. YOU want to portray with your body language that you are a Lion not a mouse.
  3. Apply the Baseball rule – 3 strikes and you are out (After 3 ‘leave me alone,’ do something).
  4. Use no more than 5 small words when dealing with insulting remarks. Keep repeating the same words over and over. Don’t get hooked into what the bully says.

The 5 rules of engagement: Gracie bully-proofing program

  1. Avoid the fight at all costs – we don’t want to fight.
  2. If physically attacked, defend yourself. You are allowed to engage, don’t hesitate
  3. If verbally attacked, follow the 3 ‘T-steps’: (1) Talk to bully (2) Tell everyone (3) Tackle bully
  4. Never punch or kick the bully, establish control on the ground & negotiate with them
  5. When applying submissions use minimal force & negotiate. Never purposely violate the rules of engagement.
